Georgia Department of Education receives over $10 million in federal grants to expand teacher apprenticeship pathways statewide
The Georgia Department of Education has received two federal grants totaling more than 10 million dollars to expand teacher apprenticeship programs statewide, including pathways for paraprofessionals and aspiring special education teachers.
The department announced Friday that it received a larger grant of nearly 6 million dollars to expand paraprofessional-to-teacher apprenticeships and a second grant of about 4.3 million dollars for apprenticeship pathways for aspiring special education teachers. The funding supports the department’s Teach in the Peach initiative and involves a partnership with the University of West Georgia and the National Center for Grow Your Own to build an apprenticeship model that could later be scaled to more educator preparation programs and school districts across the state. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Georgia school districts retained 90 percent of educators in 2025 but still had about 6,000 vacancies according to an April 2025 state audit.
