Four metro Atlanta high school interns fabricate 200-micron microscopic boat in a bottle at Georgia Tech

Four rising high school seniors from the Atlanta area spent their summer at Georgia Tech's Institute for Matter and Systems fabricating a microscopic boat inside a microscopic bottle, a structure about 200 microns long that the team has submitted for world record consideration.

The students worked in the Institute for Matter and Systems Biocleanroom under mentor Nik Roeske, using two microfabrication techniques, a metal 3D printer to build a boat-shaped test structure called a 3DBenchy and a separate 3D printer to print a polymer bottle enclosure around it. The finished piece measures about 200 microns long, smaller than a grain of table salt, and the team has submitted it for consideration as a world record.

The project gives a concrete, Georgia-based example of how hands-on nanotechnology training can introduce high school students to advanced manufacturing careers.
