Atlanta Public Schools moves toward AI policy limiting chatbot use in student assignments

Atlanta Public Schools is drafting a new AI policy that would let students use chatbots only when tied to a specific instructional objective, while barring them from using AI to complete assignments. A board decision is expected in November.

Under the draft policy, teachers could use AI tools to help plan lessons but would be barred from entering sensitive information into AI platforms. Students could use AI only when its use connects to a clearly identified instructional objective, and could not use it to complete assignments or generate their work. Administrators are scheduled to decide whether to adopt the policy at a meeting in November.
